Park Comparison
Arches vs Grand Canyon
Two iconic parks, different strengths. Here's how they stack up.
Updated
The Quick Take
Arches
Arches concentrates more than 2,000 natural stone arches into 119 square miles of red sandstone: the highest density of arches anywhere on Earth. Delicate Arch is on the Utah license plate; Landscape Arch spans 306 feet, the longest in North America. The 13-mile Devils Garden scenic drive strings together 15 named formations. The trade-off is the park's small size meets enormous demand: timed-entry reservations are required April through October, parking lots fill before 8 a.m. in season, and the heat in July routinely closes exposed trails.
Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is the headline. The Colorado River carved a chasm one mile deep, 18 miles across, and 277 miles long, exposing nearly two billion years of rock. Across 1,902 square miles, you get the South Rim's accessible viewpoints, the higher and quieter North Rim (open mid-May through mid-October), and the inner canyon with multi-day hikes from rim to river. The trade-off is logistics. With nearly 5 million annual visitors and South Rim parking that fills early, you'll need a plan for shuttles, lodging, and inner-canyon permits.

The Crowd Picture
Both parks draw millions, but the crowd experience is different.
Arches
Arches drew 1.47 million visitors in 2024 into just 119 square miles, the country's most concentrated congestion problem outside of Yosemite Valley. May and June peak at over 180,000 each, and Delicate Arch's parking lot fills before sunrise on weekends. The timed-entry permit, in place April through October, smooths the 7-to-10 a.m. spike but doesn't eliminate it. November through February offer genuine quiet: under 80,000 visitors a month, no permit, and red rock dusted occasionally with snow.
Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon absorbed 4.9 million visitors in 2024, but its 1,902 square miles and rim geometry make it bear the weight better than smaller parks. The South Rim concentrates 90% of traffic, with Mather Point and Bright Angel trailhead as predictable bottlenecks. The free South Rim shuttle moves the crowd without cars. Step a half mile down Bright Angel and the noise drops sharply. The North Rim, 1,000 feet higher and seasonally open, sees a fraction of the visitors.

Trails & Activities
Both parks are trail-rich, but they cater to different trip styles.
Arches
Arches packs 45 miles of trail into 19 routes, all built around the formations. Delicate Arch Trail climbs 480 feet over 3 miles to the iconic arch: a moderate hike that becomes punishing in summer afternoon sun. Devils Garden runs 7.2 miles to Landscape Arch and beyond, threading slickrock and fins; the optional Primitive Loop adds rock scrambling. Park Avenue is a downhill 2-mile shuttle hike between sandstone walls. Fiery Furnace requires a ranger-led permit. Most trails sit in the easy-to-moderate range.
Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon claims 750 miles of trail across 600 named routes: more than 16 times Arches. The 12.8-mile Rim Trail along the South Rim is mostly paved and shuttle-accessible. Bright Angel and South Kaibab descend into the canyon with elevation losses over 3,000 feet that you must climb back out; these are widely considered among the hardest day hikes in the system. Hermit and North Kaibab add remote backcountry options. Backpacking permits unlock multi-day inner-canyon trips to Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River.
Camping
Grand Canyon National Park offers significantly more camping options.
