Park Comparison

Channel Islands vs Joshua Tree

Two iconic parks, different strengths. Here's how they stack up.

Updated

The Quick Take

Channel Islands

Channel Islands is California's Galápagos: five islands 12 miles off the coast with 145 species found nowhere else, plus the Pacific kelp forests that surround them. Island foxes, sea lions, and rare seabirds inhabit Santa Cruz, Anacapa, and three smaller islands accessible only by ferry from Ventura. The trade-off is access: every visit requires a boat (or a small plane), camping is the only on-island lodging, and bad weather can strand you offshore for an extra day.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree is where two desert ecosystems collide on 1,234 square miles of granite boulders, dagger-leafed yuccas, and some of the darkest skies in the contiguous United States. The park is a sport-climbing capital, a Gold-tier International Dark Sky Park, and an easy two-hour drive from Los Angeles. The trade-off is heat: summer highs hit 113°F and the park empties from June through September. Visit October through April or accept that hiking happens before sunrise.

The Crowd Picture

Both parks draw millions, but the crowd experience is different.

Channel Islands

Channel Islands sees 263,000 annual visitors (fewer than most state parks), and the ferry system caps daily numbers automatically. July is the peak month at 33,000 visitors, but distributed across five islands, so even Santa Cruz's Scorpion Anchorage rarely feels crowded. Anacapa's tiny landing area and limited boat schedule mean you might share the island with twenty people on a quiet day. The mainland visitor center in Ventura sees more foot traffic than the islands themselves.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree pulled in 3 million visitors in 2024, with crowds clustering around Hidden Valley, Skull Rock, and Keys View on weekends from October through April. March is the peak month; wildflower chasers arrive en masse. Parking at Barker Dam fills before 9 a.m. The good news is the park's geometry: 800,000 acres of boulder maze means you can walk five minutes from any trailhead and find solitude. Summer is empty for obvious reasons: the heat is dangerous.

Trails & Activities

Both parks are trail-rich, but they cater to different trip styles.

Channel Islands

Channel Islands' 45 miles of trail spread across five islands. Anacapa Landing Cove Trail is a half-mile climb to the lighthouse. Santa Cruz's Prisoner's Harbor to Chinese Harbor Trail covers nine miles of coastal bluffs and access to a sea cave. Santa Rosa's Lobo Canyon Trail is a 9.5-mile backcountry route to a beach campsite: strenuous, remote, and one of the most rewarding day hikes in the California park system. San Miguel and Santa Barbara islands offer additional trails for serious adventurers.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree's 190 miles of trail are mostly short, mostly desert, and consistently weird in the best way. Hidden Valley Trail loops a one-mile boulder amphitheater that climbers use as their living room. Ryan Mountain climbs 1,000 feet in three miles to a 360-degree view of three desert basins. Lost Palms Oasis Trail leads three miles to a hidden palm grove. Rock climbing is the real headline: thousands of established routes make this one of the world's premier sport-climbing destinations.
