Park Comparison
Petrified Forest vs Saguaro
Two iconic parks, different strengths. Here's how they stack up.
Updated
The Quick Take
Petrified Forest
Petrified Forest condenses 225 million years of geology into a 28-mile scenic drive through technicolor badlands. Fossilized tree trunks the diameter of a small car lie scattered across the Painted Desert; Newspaper Rock holds petroglyphs from people who walked here 600 to 2,000 years ago; Route 66 still runs through the middle. The trade-off is that this is essentially a one-day park with no campgrounds inside the boundary. Sleep in Holbrook or build it into a Grand Canyon road trip.
Saguaro
Saguaro flanks Tucson with two districts of the densest stands of giant saguaro cacti anywhere on Earth. These 200-year-old, 40-foot-tall green giants are protected only here, frozen in a small sliver of Sonoran Desert. The Cactus Forest Drive in the East and the scenic loop in the West both deliver world-class sunset photography. The trade-off is summer heat that genuinely closes the park for hiking: June and July average 100°F-plus, and the only sleeping option is six remote backcountry campgrounds reachable only on foot.

The Crowd Picture
Both parks draw millions, but the crowd experience is different.
Petrified Forest
Petrified Forest pulled 559,000 visitors in 2024, with June as the peak month at 76,000. The park is essentially a corridor. Interstate 40 visitors stop, drive the 28-mile loop, photograph the Painted Desert, and leave. Blue Mesa and the Crystal Forest pullouts can fill at midday in spring; by 4 p.m. the loop empties even in May. January and December see fewer than 30,000 visitors total. The badlands look stunning in low winter light with no one around.
Saguaro
Saguaro absorbed 946,000 visitors in 2024, heavier than Petrified Forest but split between two districts on opposite sides of Tucson. March is peak at 156,000 visitors when the desert blooms and snowbirds linger. The Cactus Forest Drive in the East fills earliest; the West district stays quieter through midday. Summer empties the park: August's 35,000 visitors barely register because triple-digit heat shuts down hiking entirely. Fall and winter restore moderate but pleasant traffic.

Trails & Activities
Both parks are trail-rich, but they cater to different trip styles.
Petrified Forest
Petrified Forest's 30 miles of trail are short, accessible, and built around the geology. The 1-mile Blue Mesa loop drops into striped badlands past large petrified logs; the 3-mile Painted Desert Rim Trail strings together overlooks; the 0.3-mile Newspaper Rock Trail reaches petroglyphs in a quarter-hour. Long Logs adds a 2.6-mile walk through the densest fossil concentration. With no trail longer than 3 miles, this is a park of stops, not days. Easy and moderate dominates; backcountry hiking is permitted but rarely used.
Saguaro
Saguaro packs 50 miles of trail into 22 routes that range from a half-mile Desert Discovery Trail loop to the 5-mile Hugh Norris ridge climb in the West, gaining 1,200 feet for ridge views over the Sonoran. Cactus Forest Trail in the East is the most popular at 2.5 miles among saguaro stands. Mica View loops through cacti and mountain views in 2 miles. Six wilderness campgrounds enable backpacking up to Manning Camp at 8,000 feet, where temperatures drop dramatically.
Camping
Saguaro National Park offers significantly more camping options.
