Blackwoods Campground
The Quick Take
Blackwoods is Acadia's flagship campground, and it earns that reputation honestly. Tucked into the woods on Mount Desert Island's east side, every site sits under a canopy of spruce and birch, with the Atlantic Ocean a short walk through the trees. At sixty dollars a night with no showers and no hookups, you're paying a premium for location rather than luxury — the campground sits right along the Park Loop Road corridor, putting Thunder Hole, Otter Cliff, and the Beehive trailhead within biking distance. The trade-off is real: this is not a quiet retreat. With nearly three hundred sites packed into dense forest, you will hear your neighbors. RVs are welcome but the wooded sites and low bridges on the Loop Road make maneuvering interesting. Choose Blackwoods if you want to roll out of your tent and onto Acadia's marquee trails without touching your car keys.

Pro Tips
Reservations open on recreation.gov six months in advance and July-August weekends sell out within hours of dropping. Set a calendar reminder for the exact release date and book at 10 AM Eastern sharp — hesitating even fifteen minutes can mean losing your preferred dates entirely.
Sites in the 100-200 range along loops C and D tend to be slightly more spacious and farther from the main road noise. If you're tent camping, avoid the sites nearest the dump station and amphitheater, where foot traffic picks up after dark.
There are no showers at Blackwoods, but the Village Green in Bar Harbor has public restrooms and you can grab a shower at the Bar Harbor Athletic Club for a small fee. Stock up on firewood before you arrive — the campground does not sell it, and roadside bundles on Route 3 are half the price of what you'll find closer to the park entrance.
