The Quick Take

Schoodic Woods is Acadia's best-kept secret — a modern campground on the quiet side of the park that most visitors never bother to reach. Sitting on the Schoodic Peninsula, about an hour's drive from the Bar Harbor circus, it trades convenience for something increasingly rare in Acadia: breathing room. The campground is the newest in the park, with well-designed sites, WiFi (a genuine surprise for a national park), and a proper amphitheater, but don't expect showers, flush toilets, or cell service. The trade-off is worth it. You get the same stunning Maine coastline without the bumper-to-bumper traffic on Park Loop Road. RVers are welcome, though there are no hookups, so come prepared to dry camp. This is the campground for anyone who loves Acadia but hates what Acadia has become in peak season.

Booking tip: Schoodic Woods fills up later than Blackwoods and Seawall, but weekends from July through early September still require booking the moment the reservation window opens — aim for midweek arrivals in September for the easiest availability and peak fall color.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Schoodic Peninsula has its own scenic loop road with a fraction of the traffic you'll find on Mount Desert Island. Bike it early morning before the day-trippers arrive — the Schoodic Woods bike paths connect directly to the loop, so you can ride straight from your site.

Camping Tip

Stock up on groceries and firewood before you cross onto the peninsula. There's no camp store, no firewood sales on-site, and Winter Harbor's options are limited. The Shaw's in Ellsworth is your last reliable full-service grocery stop.

Camping Tip

The lack of cell service is real — plan accordingly. Download offline maps, let people know your plans, and lean into the disconnection. The campground WiFi works near the common areas but don't count on streaming anything back at your site.
