East Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The granite scrambles become dangerously slick when wet — after rain or morning fog, the rock offers almost no traction. Wait for dry conditions or be prepared to turn back.
There is significant exposure on the steeper sections with no guardrails or barriers. Keep children close and stay well back from ledge edges, especially on windy days when gusts can be surprisingly strong on the exposed east face.

Pro Tips
Combine East Trail with the Schoodic Head loop — ascend via East Trail for the scrambling challenge, then descend the gentler Anvil Trail for a full circuit that covers all the best viewpoints on the peninsula.
Wear shoes with sticky rubber soles rather than soft hiking boots — the granite slab scrambling rewards approach-shoe grip over ankle support on a trail this short.
The Schoodic Peninsula sees a fraction of Acadia's traffic, but the small parking areas still fill by mid-morning in July and August. Arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM to guarantee a spot and softer light for photos from the summit.
