Hike Bald Peak and Parkman Mountain Loop

What to Expect

This loop packs a surprising punch for under three miles. You'll start on the Bald Peak Trail, which wastes no time throwing you onto steep granite slabs that demand hands-on-rock scrambling in places — there's even a single iron rung bolted into the stone to help you up one particularly stubborn ledge. The forest thins quickly as you gain elevation, and once you top out on Bald Peak, Somes Sound stretches below you like a fjord carved from a postcard. The traverse to Parkman Mountain crosses one of Acadia's signature carriage roads before delivering you to a second open summit with views sweeping from Northeast Harbor to the outer islands. The descent on the Parkman Mountain Trail is noticeably gentler — a built-in cool-down. This is a perfect hike for anyone who wants real summit views and granite scrambling without committing to a half-day Cadillac Mountain sufferfest.

Safety Advisory

The exposed granite slabs on the Bald Peak side become dangerously slick when wet. Skip this trail after rain or morning fog — the rock offers almost no traction when damp, and several sections have serious fall exposure.

One iron rung assists a steep rock face on the Bald Peak approach. Dogs technically are allowed on leash, but this section and the surrounding scrambles make it a poor choice for most pets.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop clockwise — start on Bald Peak Trail for the steeper ascent while your legs are fresh, then descend the more moderate Parkman Mountain Trail side.

Trail Tip

This is one of Acadia's best sunset hikes. The western-facing summit of Parkman Mountain catches golden light beautifully, but bring a headlamp — the granite slabs on the Bald Peak side would be treacherous to descend in fading light, so plan your direction accordingly.

Trail Tip

Park at the Parkman Mountain parking area on Route 198 near the north end of Norumbega Mountain. It's a small lot that rarely fills up, unlike the zoo at Jordan Pond.
