What to Expect

Beech Mountain packs a surprising punch for barely over a mile. The trail climbs through a dense spruce-fir forest on Acadia's quieter west side, away from the Cadillac Mountain crowds, with roots and rocky steps keeping your feet honest the whole way up. As you gain elevation, gaps in the canopy open to reveal Long Pond stretching out below like a mirror and the humped ridgeline of Mansell Mountain across the valley. The summit reward is one of Acadia's best-kept secrets: a historic fire tower you can climb for a full panoramic sweep of Mount Desert Island, the ocean beyond, and on clear days, the Camden Hills to the southwest. This is the trail for hikers who want a legitimate summit experience without committing to a half-day death march — perfect for families with kids old enough to scramble, sunset chasers, and anyone who thinks the best views should be earned, just not suffered for.

Safety Advisory

The rocky sections near the summit are slick when wet — granite and morning dew or rain create a surface about as grippy as a bowling lane. Stick to dry conditions or wear shoes with aggressive tread.

The fire tower stairs are exposed metal and can be icy in early spring and late fall. Dogs are not allowed on the tower, so plan accordingly if you are hiking with your pup.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your hike for late afternoon — Beech Mountain faces west, making it one of Acadia's premier sunset perches. The fire tower at golden hour is worth rearranging your dinner reservation for, but bring a headlamp because the rocky descent in the dark is no joke.

Trail Tip

Park at the Beech Mountain parking lot at the end of Beech Hill Road, not the Beech Cliff lot — they sound interchangeable but starting from the wrong one adds unnecessary distance and a confusing junction. The lot is small and fills by mid-morning in July and August, so arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM.

Trail Tip

Hike the loop clockwise (south trail up, west trail down) for the best pacing — you get the steeper climb out of the way first and the more gradual descent on tired legs. The south approach also delivers the Long Pond views earlier, which keeps morale high on the uphill push.
