What to Expect

Emery Path wastes zero time getting to the point. From Sieur de Monts, you're immediately climbing hand-laid granite steps that rise through a canopy of birch and spruce — the kind of meticulous Civilian Conservation Corps-era stonework that makes you wonder how anyone hauled these slabs up a mountainside. The half-mile distance is deceptive; this is a relentless vertical push that'll have your calves filing formal complaints within minutes. The forest closes in tight, keeping you shaded even on the hottest August afternoons, and the craftsmanship of the trail itself becomes the attraction — massive stone staircases, carefully placed cairns, drainage channels that have survived a century of nor'easters. Emery Path connects to Schiff Path and eventually Dorr Mountain's summit, so think of it as a gorgeous staircase to bigger things. History buffs and trail-architecture nerds will be in heaven.

Safety Advisory

The granite steps get dangerously slick when wet — after rain or heavy fog, treat every surface like a skating rink. Trekking poles help, but rubber-soled boots with real grip are non-negotiable.

Despite the 'wheelchair accessible' tag from NPS, this trail involves steep, uneven stone stairs that are not passable for wheelchairs or mobility devices — the accessible features refer to the Sieur de Monts area at the base, not the trail itself.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park at Sieur de Monts and knock this out early before the Island Explorer bus crowds arrive — the small lot fills by 9:30 AM in peak season, but you can also take the bus (Blackwoods line) and skip the parking headache entirely.

Trail Tip

Use this as the opening leg of a Dorr Mountain loop: climb Emery to Schiff Path, summit Dorr, then descend via the Dorr Mountain Ladder Trail for a full circuit that hits three of Acadia's best-built historic paths in one outing.

Trail Tip

Pause at the trail junction with Schiff Path and look back through the trees — on clear mornings you'll catch filtered views toward the Tarn and Champlain Ridge that most hikers miss because they're heads-down on the climb.
