Hike Gorham Mountain Loop
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The granite slab sections along the coast and near the summit get treacherously slick when wet — after rain or heavy fog, every step on bare rock demands full attention. Trekking poles help but won't save you from a bad decision.
The exposed summit ridge offers zero shade and zero wind protection. On hot summer days, the sun reflecting off granite can cook you faster than you'd expect on a short hike. Carry more water than you think you need.

Pro Tips
Start from the Gorham Mountain trailhead on Park Loop Road rather than the Sand Beach end — you'll get the coastal drama first while your legs are fresh and dodge the crowd bottleneck at Sand Beach parking.
Pair this with a detour to the Cadillac Cliffs Trail spur on the way up for some legitimate hand-over-hand scrambling through a narrow cliff passage — it adds maybe twenty minutes but doubles the adventure factor.
Time your finish for late afternoon in September or early October when the setting sun turns the granite slabs gold and the summer bus crowds have thinned to almost nothing.
