Hike Great Head with Island Explorer Bus

What to Expect

Great Head packs a surprising punch for such a short loop. You start at Sand Beach — one of the few actual sand beaches in Acadia — and almost immediately begin a rocky scramble up granite slabs that rise above Newport Cove. The trail is rough and uneven, with sections of exposed bedrock that demand your attention, but the payoff comes fast: panoramic views of the Atlantic crashing against the headlands, Champlain Mountain rising behind you, and the Beehive's cliff face across the cove. The longer 1.9-mile loop threads through a quiet spruce forest before spitting you back onto the beach. At the summit — barely above the treetops — you get a 360-degree sweep that rivals viewpoints requiring triple the effort. This is the ideal hike for families or anyone who wants dramatic coastal scenery without committing to a full day on the trail.

Safety Advisory

The granite scramble sections are slippery when wet — after rain or morning fog, the rock becomes genuinely treacherous. Postpone if conditions are damp.

The cliff edges at the Great Head overlook have no railings or barriers. Keep children and dogs close, especially on windy days when gusts can catch you off balance.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the Island Explorer bus (Sand Beach stop) instead of driving — the Sand Beach parking lot fills by 9:30 AM in summer, and the bus drops you right at the trailhead with zero parking stress.

Trail Tip

Scuff your boot soles on dry ground before hitting the granite scramble. Sand from the beach coats the rock and turns your footwear into hockey pucks — thirty seconds of cleaning saves you a sketchy moment.

Trail Tip

For the best photos, hike the loop counterclockwise and reach the headland overlook in the morning when the sun lights up Sand Beach and the Beehive from behind you. The afternoon sun shoots straight into your lens from the ocean side.
