What to Expect

Homans Path packs a surprising punch into its brief third-of-a-mile length. Starting at the Sieur de Monts area — one of Acadia's most historically rich trailheads — you'll immediately begin climbing hand-laid granite steps that feel more like ascending a cathedral staircase than hiking a trail. The stonework here is genuinely remarkable, with carefully fitted blocks and carved steps that date back to Acadia's path-building golden age. The forest canopy keeps things shaded and cool even on warm summer days, but make no mistake: this is a relentless vertical push. Your calves will know they've been somewhere. The path connects to Schiff Path and eventually the summit of Dorr Mountain, so it works beautifully as the opening act of a longer adventure. History buffs and trail-architecture nerds will be in heaven here — this is hiking as craftsmanship.

Safety Advisory

The granite steps become dangerously slick when wet — after rain or heavy fog, every surface turns into a skating rink. Avoid this trail in those conditions or bring trekking poles and shoes with aggressive tread.

Despite the short distance, the sustained steepness makes this a poor choice for anyone with knee or ankle issues. There are no flat recovery sections — it climbs the entire way.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park at the Sieur de Monts Spring parking area to start right at the trailhead — it fills up by mid-morning in summer, so arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM to snag a spot without circling.

Trail Tip

Use Homans Path as the start of a Dorr Mountain loop: climb Homans to Schiff Path, summit Dorr, then descend via the Dorr Mountain South Ridge Trail for a satisfying half-day circuit.

Trail Tip

Pause on the steeper sections to study the stonework up close — the fitted granite steps and retaining walls rival anything on the famous Jordan Cliffs path, and they photograph beautifully in morning side-light when the texture pops.
