What to Expect

Kebo Brook Trail is the kind of hike that rewards you disproportionately for the effort involved. You start on a mellow, packed-earth path through a hushed birch and spruce forest, crossing Kebo Brook on a simple bridge where the sound of water fills the gaps between birdsong. The first mile lulls you into thinking this is a casual stroll — and then the trail pivots. A short, punchy scramble up exposed granite steps delivers you to the top of Kebo Mountain, where partial views of Frenchman Bay open up through the trees. It is not the panoramic spectacle of Cadillac, but that is exactly the point: you will likely have this summit to yourself while the crowds queue up elsewhere. Perfect for hikers who want a quick taste of Acadia's summit game without committing to a full morning.

Safety Advisory

The granite sections near the summit get slick when wet — after rain or morning dew, take the rock steps deliberately and avoid the temptation to scramble off-trail on the smooth slabs.

The trail is marked but not heavily signed at every junction. Download the Acadia trail map offline before you go, since cell service is spotty on the lower sections.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

When Park Loop Road closes mid-December through mid-April, access the trail via Kebo Street instead — it actually makes for a quieter approach with easier parking than the summer trailhead at the Cadillac North Ridge Island Explorer stop.

Trail Tip

Pair this with the Cadillac North Ridge Trail for a longer loop that bags two summits in a single morning — start with Kebo while your legs are fresh, then cross over to Cadillac for the big views.

Trail Tip

The brook crossing about a third of the way in is the most photogenic spot on the trail, especially in early morning when the light filters through the canopy at a low angle. Bring a polarizing filter if you shoot landscapes.
