What to Expect

This trail doesn't mess around. From the moment you leave the Tarn at Sieur de Monts, you're climbing — straight up a staircase of hand-hewn granite steps that Acadia's trail builders carved into the mountainside over a century ago. It's barely a half-mile, but your quads will know every foot of it. The steps are steep, uneven, and polished smooth in places by thousands of boots. Towering birch and spruce press in on both sides, keeping you shaded even on the hottest August afternoons. The trail is really a gateway — it connects to Schiff Path and eventually the summit of Dorr Mountain, which delivers panoramic views rivaling Cadillac without the parking lot crowds. This one is for hikers who appreciate craftsmanship and history as much as the climb itself, and who'd rather earn their views on stone steps than share a summit road with tour buses.

Safety Advisory

The granite steps become dangerously slick when wet — morning dew, fog, and rain turn this into an ice rink. Save it for a dry day or at least wait until mid-morning when the stone has dried.

Despite the wheelchair-accessible tag at the trailhead area, the climb itself is extremely steep with tall, uneven stone steps — it is not accessible beyond the base.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Sieur de Monts entrance near the Nature Center rather than the Park Loop Road — the parking is easier and you get the Tarn as a warm-up before the climb begins.

Trail Tip

Trekking poles are more hindrance than help here. The granite steps are tight and irregular, and you'll want both hands free to grab rock edges on the steepest sections.

Trail Tip

Use this as a connector route to Dorr Mountain's summit via Schiff Path — the full out-and-back from the Tarn to Dorr's peak and back is one of the quietest summit routes on Mount Desert Island.
