What to Expect

Let's be honest — calling this 'moderate' is generous. The Precipice Trail is Acadia's most thrilling route, a vertical scramble up iron rungs and ladders bolted into sheer granite cliff faces on Champlain Mountain. You'll start in the trees, but within minutes you're pulling yourself up metal handholds with nothing but air between you and the parking lot far below. The exposure is real and relentless. Narrow ledges, open traverses across rock faces, and sections where you're essentially climbing a ladder pinned to a cliff wall. The reward at the summit is a panoramic sweep of Frenchman Bay, the Porcupine Islands, and Bar Harbor spread out like a postcard. This trail is built for adrenaline seekers who want to earn their views with white knuckles and burning forearms — not for anyone who gets queasy on a stepladder.

Safety Advisory

This trail crosses open cliff faces with significant exposure and sheer drop-offs. One slip on wet rock or a loose handhold means a potentially fatal fall — skip this trail entirely in rain, fog, or any moisture. There are no guardrails.

The trail closes annually from roughly mid-March through mid-August to protect nesting peregrine falcons. Check NPS current conditions before driving out — the closure dates shift each year based on the birds' nesting activity.

Not appropriate for children, dogs, or anyone uncomfortable with heights. Several sections require upper body strength to pull yourself up iron rungs on near-vertical rock. If you freeze up on exposed terrain, there's no easy way to retreat.

Season This trail and associated trails are closed seasonally to public entry to protect peregrine falcons from inadvertent disturbance or harassment during the nesting period. Park staff has observed adults at these sites engaging in courtship and pre-nesting behavior signaling the birds’ intentions to nest and raise chicks during the spring and early summer. Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Do NOT descend via the Precipice — take the Champlain North Ridge Trail or Orange & Black Path down instead. The downclimb on iron rungs with exposure is significantly more dangerous than the ascent, and NPS actively advises against it.

Trail Tip

Arrive before 8:30 AM to snag parking at the Precipice trailhead lot on Park Loop Road — it fills fast on summer mornings and there's no overflow. If it's full, the Sand Beach lot is your closest backup.

Trail Tip

Stash your trekking poles before the rung sections — you'll need both hands free for the iron ladders and handholds. A small daypack that sits tight against your back beats a loose bag that shifts your balance on the exposed traverses.
