What to Expect

Don't let the listed distance fool you — this is a proper loop that plays out over a couple of hours across Acadia's quieter western flank. You'll climb through a birch and spruce forest that opens onto bare granite slabs with jaw-dropping views of Somes Sound, the only fjord on the eastern seaboard (geologists will argue about that label, but the views don't care). The east side eases you in with a moderate ascent, while the west side drops steeply toward the sound with sections that feel more like scrambling than hiking. At the summit — a modest perch that punches well above its weight — you get a panoramic sweep of Echo Lake, the Cranberry Isles, and the Camden Hills fading into the distance. The Island Explorer bus eliminates the headache of roadside parking on Route 102, which is reason enough to love this route. Ideal for hikers who want real views without an all-day commitment.

Safety Advisory

The west-side descent toward Somes Sound is genuinely steep with smooth granite slabs that become slick when wet — wear shoes with real tread and avoid this route after rain or morning dew.

Several sections involve exposed rock scrambling without railings or steps — this trail is labeled accessible but the loop portion is not wheelchair-friendly despite the official tag, so plan accordingly if mobility is a concern.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the Island Explorer Route 7 (Southwest Harbor) and get off at the Acadia Mountain trailhead — it runs frequently in summer and saves you from the narrow, shoulder-less parking situation on Route 102 that fills up by mid-morning.

Trail Tip

Hike the loop counterclockwise (east side up, west side down) so you're ascending the gentler grade and descending the steeper, more technical section with better footing control — going up the west side on wet granite is asking for trouble.

Trail Tip

The best photo op isn't at the true summit — it's the open ledge about two-thirds of the way up on the east side where Somes Sound stretches out below you without any tree obstruction. Afternoon light hits the water perfectly from late June through September.
