Hike Wonderland Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The granite ledges at the shoreline are dangerously slick when wet — seaweed-covered rocks near the waterline are essentially ice rinks. Wear shoes with real traction, not flip-flops.
Never turn your back on the ocean. Rogue waves on this coast are rare but real, and the rocks offer no gradual shoreline — the water is deep and cold immediately off the ledge.

Pro Tips
Time your visit to arrive about an hour before low tide — this gives you the full tidepool window as the water recedes, and you won't get caught scrambling back over slippery rocks as it comes in. Check the Bar Harbor tide chart before heading out.
Park early or late in summer — the small lot on Route 102A fills fast by mid-morning from June through September. The Island Explorer bus (Route 7) stops at Seawall, a short walk from the trailhead, and saves you the parking headache entirely.
At the shoreline, work your way left along the rocks for a less-visited stretch of coast with better tidepool variety. Most visitors cluster right at the trail's end, so a few minutes of rock-hopping buys you relative solitude and more interesting marine life.
