What to Expect

Starting from the Sand Dune Arch parking area, this trail immediately sets itself apart from the crowded roadside stops in Arches. You'll cross a surprisingly open grassland — a rarity in a park defined by slickrock — with sweeping views of sandstone fins rising on either side. The path is flat and sandy, making it feel more like a desert meadow stroll than a typical red rock scramble. As you approach Broken Arch, the formation reveals itself gradually: a massive freestanding span with a dramatic crack running across its top, as if the desert is slowly reclaiming its own architecture. You can walk right up to and even through the arch, which most visitors never realize. This is the trail for anyone who wants a quiet moment with a landmark arch while everyone else is gridlocked at Delicate Arch trailhead.

Safety Advisory

The open grassland section offers zero shade. In summer months, ground temperatures can exceed 140 degrees Fahrenheit on exposed sand, so time your hike for early morning or late afternoon and carry more water than you think a short trail requires.

Do not climb on or near the arch itself — the namesake crack is a reminder that these formations are actively eroding, and rockfall is a real possibility.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Connect this with the Sand Dune Arch spur trail (a two-minute detour at the trailhead) to knock out two arches in one short outing — Sand Dune Arch sits in a narrow slot between fins and offers welcome shade on hot days.

Trail Tip

Visit in late afternoon when the parking area empties out and the western light turns the arch a deep amber. You'll likely have the formation to yourself while sunset crowds flock to the Windows section.

Trail Tip

Walk all the way through the arch and around its backside for the best photo angle — the crack is most visible from the northeast, and you can frame the La Sal Mountains in the background through the opening.
