What to Expect

This quick detour off the Devils Garden trail rewards you with one of Arches' most intimate formations — a sheltered sandstone alcove where desert plants somehow thrive in the shade of the arch itself. The spur splits off from the main Double O Arch route and drops into a rocky wash before climbing slightly to the arch. It's rougher underfoot than the paved sections near Landscape Arch, with slickrock scrambling and some route-finding over cairned terrain. The arch itself feels like a hidden room — a curved overhang with greenery clinging to the protected sand beneath it, a stark contrast to the sun-blasted desert you just crossed. Photographers will love the natural framing, and anyone who's been grinding through the full Devils Garden primitive loop will appreciate this peaceful side trip. Perfect for curious hikers who want more than the greatest-hits arches.

Safety Advisory

The trail crosses exposed slickrock with limited shade — in summer, surface temperatures can exceed 150 degrees and the reflected heat is brutal. Start the full Devils Garden loop early to reach this spur before midday.

Some sections require light scrambling over uneven rock. Watch your footing, especially if the sandstone is dusted with sand, which makes it surprisingly slippery.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit this spur on your way out from Double O Arch, not on the way in — you'll have a better sense of the trail junction after seeing the main route, and the afternoon light fills the alcove beautifully.

Trail Tip

The junction is easy to miss if you're focused on the Double O destination. Watch for cairns on the left side of the trail roughly halfway between Navajo and Double O — a GPS waypoint saved beforehand helps.

Trail Tip

Bring a wide-angle lens if you shoot photos. The arch is close and overhead, so you'll need that focal range to capture the full curve with the vegetation beneath it. The sheltered alcove also makes a great spot to rest out of the wind.
