What to Expect

This half-mile detour off the Devils Garden Primitive Trail rewards you with something rare in Arches — genuine solitude. The spur branches off the already-less-traveled primitive loop, crossing slickrock and sandy washes with minimal trail markers. You'll need to watch for cairns and trust your route-finding instincts as you navigate across open sandstone. The payoff is Private Arch, a graceful opening in a fin wall that you'll likely have entirely to yourself while crowds jostle for photos at Landscape and Delicate. The arch sits in a quiet alcove that feels almost hidden, a pocket of stillness in one of Utah's busiest parks. This one is for hikers who treat the primitive trail as a starting point, not a destination — the kind who'd rather discover something on their own than follow a paved path to an overlook.

Safety Advisory

The route crosses exposed slickrock with limited shade — in summer, surface temperatures can be scorching and the reflected heat is brutal, so avoid midday entirely from June through September.

Navigation is the real hazard here. Cairns are inconsistent and the slickrock terrain makes it easy to wander off-route — if you lose the trail, backtrack to the last cairn rather than pushing forward on a guess.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Reach Private Arch by first hiking the full Devils Garden Trail to the primitive trail junction — the spur branches off about midway along the primitive loop, so plan for a substantial outing, not just a quick half-mile walk.

Trail Tip

Carry a map or download the offline trail in AllTrails before you go — the spur is unmarked on most park maps and cairns can be sparse, especially after wind or rain rearranges the sand.

Trail Tip

Visit in the late afternoon when the western light fills the arch with a warm glow and most day-hikers have already turned back from the primitive trail, giving you the best chance at a completely private visit.
