What to Expect

This is one of those trails that feels like a secret, even though the parking lot is right off the main road. From the trailhead, you slip between two towering sandstone fins into a narrow corridor where the walls block out most of the sky and the temperature drops noticeably. The ground turns to deep, soft sand — the kind kids immediately want to take their shoes off in. After just a few minutes of walking through this sheltered slot, the arch reveals itself overhead, spanning the gap between the fins like a stone bridge frozen mid-leap. The sandy floor beneath the arch is a natural playground, and you'll likely find families camped out letting their kids dig and roll around. The whole thing takes about twenty minutes round trip if you're moving with purpose, but there's no reason to rush. Perfect for toddler legs, grandparents, or anyone who wants an arch experience without earning it on the trail.

Safety Advisory

The deep sand gets extremely hot in summer — surface temperatures can exceed what bare feet can handle between late morning and early evening from June through August. Test it with your hand before letting kids go barefoot.

Do not climb on or around the arch. The sandstone is fragile, and falls from even modest heights onto hard-packed sand have sent visitors to the ER.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit this trail early morning or late afternoon — the narrow canyon between the fins is one of the few shaded spots in Arches, but midday sun still bakes the open sections of the parking area and approach.

Trail Tip

The sand is deep and loose underfoot, so skip the hiking boots and wear sandals or trail runners. Barefoot works too if the sand isn't scorching. Traditional hiking shoes just fill up with sand.

Trail Tip

Combine this with Broken Arch Trail, which shares the same trailhead. You can loop both in under an hour and get two arches for the price of one parking spot — a smart move during peak season when lots fill up.
