Tower Arch Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The access road is the real hazard here — getting stuck in Sand Flats or on rain-slicked clay means a long wait for help in an area with no cell service. Let someone know your plans and carry basic recovery gear.
Several sections cross open slickrock with minimal cairns. In low light or blowing sand, it's easy to lose the route. Pay attention to cairn placement on the way in so you can navigate back confidently.

Pro Tips
The Salt Valley Road access requires genuine high clearance — not just an SUV with street tires. After rain, it becomes impassable clay. Check conditions at the visitor center before committing, or you'll be doing a long, sad reverse on a one-lane track.
Carry at least two liters per person even though the distance is short — there's zero shade on the exposed ridgeline section, and the sand and slickrock reflect heat like a pizza oven. Start before 9 AM in summer months.
For the iconic shot of Tower Arch framing the La Sal Mountains, position yourself directly beneath the arch and shoot outward. Late afternoon light (around 4-5 PM in shoulder season) paints the arch gold while the mountains stay lit — morning light leaves the arch face in shadow.
