What to Expect

Tower Arch is Arches National Park's best-kept secret, and the road getting there is half the adventure. After bouncing along a rutted dirt track that'll test your rental car's clearance (and your nerves), you'll find a trailhead with maybe two other cars — a stark contrast to the Devil's Garden parking lot circus. The trail climbs through sandy desert terrain, weaving between sandstone fins and juniper trees before cresting a ridge where the landscape opens up dramatically. The final approach reveals Tower Arch itself — a massive freestanding span framing the snow-capped La Sal Mountains and the distant Fisher Towers like nature's own picture window. The modest elevation gain hits in short punches rather than one sustained grind. This trail rewards anyone willing to work a little harder for solitude and a payoff that rivals Delicate Arch without the crowd.

Safety Advisory

The access road is the real hazard here — getting stuck in Sand Flats or on rain-slicked clay means a long wait for help in an area with no cell service. Let someone know your plans and carry basic recovery gear.

Several sections cross open slickrock with minimal cairns. In low light or blowing sand, it's easy to lose the route. Pay attention to cairn placement on the way in so you can navigate back confidently.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The Salt Valley Road access requires genuine high clearance — not just an SUV with street tires. After rain, it becomes impassable clay. Check conditions at the visitor center before committing, or you'll be doing a long, sad reverse on a one-lane track.

Trail Tip

Carry at least two liters per person even though the distance is short — there's zero shade on the exposed ridgeline section, and the sand and slickrock reflect heat like a pizza oven. Start before 9 AM in summer months.

Trail Tip

For the iconic shot of Tower Arch framing the La Sal Mountains, position yourself directly beneath the arch and shoot outward. Late afternoon light (around 4-5 PM in shoulder season) paints the arch gold while the mountains stay lit — morning light leaves the arch face in shadow.
