The Quick Take

Sage Creek is the Badlands campground that separates the casual visitors from the committed ones, and it rewards the committed handsomely. This is free, primitive camping on the park's quieter western side, where bison regularly wander through camp like they own the place -- because they do. There's no water, no hookups, no camp store, and no cell service, which means there's also no crowds, no generator hum, and no one shining their phone flashlight at midnight. The unpaved access road keeps the RV parade at bay, and the lack of fees means you're trading dollars for self-sufficiency. Bring every drop of water you'll need and a camp stove, since open fires are banned. This is the campground for people who think 'primitive' is a feature, not a warning -- backpackers, stargazers, and anyone who wants to fall asleep to the sound of absolutely nothing.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Fill up every water container you own at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center before making the drive out on Sage Creek Rim Road. Plan on at least one gallon per person per day, more in summer. There is zero potable water at this campground and the nearest source is a long, dusty drive back east.

Camping Tip

Check road conditions before you commit -- Sage Creek Rim Road is unpaved and closes after heavy rain or spring snowmelt. Call the park visitor center the morning of your visit. If the road is marginal, a high-clearance vehicle will save you grief, though it's usually passable for standard cars in dry weather.

Camping Tip

Camp here specifically for the night sky. With no light pollution, no cell towers, and the nearest town a solid drive away, Sage Creek delivers some of the best stargazing in the Great Plains. Bring a headlamp with a red light mode so you don't ruin your night vision, and set up your chair facing away from the pit toilet area.
