What to Expect

Medicine Root Loop packs a surprising amount of Badlands scenery into a quick mile. You'll start on the prairie floor, weaving through chest-high grasses before the trail drops you into a maze of eroded spires and striped mudstone walls that look like they belong on another planet. The elevation change is barely noticeable — more of a gentle roll than any real climb — but the terrain underfoot shifts from packed dirt to loose, crumbly clay that keeps you paying attention. The loop format means you're constantly getting new angles on the formations, and the back half opens up to wide views across the White River Valley. This is the trail for anyone who wants classic Badlands geology without committing to a longer route, and it's especially rewarding for photographers who want to work the light on those banded formations without fighting crowds.

Safety Advisory

There is zero shade on this trail — in summer, surface temperatures on the exposed clay can exceed what the air temperature suggests by a wide margin, so avoid midday from June through August.

The trail markings through the formations can be faint; if the path seems to vanish on bare rock, look for small cairns or posts rather than forging your own route through fragile terrain.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Pinnacles Overlook end of the Ben Reifel area — the trailhead parking lot is small but rarely full, and you'll have the loop mostly to yourself if you arrive before 9 AM.

Trail Tip

Wear shoes with decent tread even though it's short — the clay sections get slick as soap after any rain, and the crumbly badlands soil will chew up sandals.

Trail Tip

The most photogenic stretch is the northwest curve of the loop where eroded pillars frame the prairie beyond — golden hour light turns the banded layers from dull gray to deep orange and purple.
