What to Expect

Don't let the distance fool you — Saddle Pass packs more adventure into a tenth of a mile than most trails deliver in five. This is essentially a scramble straight up the Badlands Wall, climbing loose gravel and clay ledges that feel more like a ladder than a trail. Your hands will touch rock. Your boots will slip. And then, suddenly, you're standing on top of the Wall with the entire White River Valley sprawling out below and the jagged spires of the upper prairie stretching to the horizon. The trail connects to both Castle Trail and Medicine Root Loop at the top, making it the most dramatic entrance to the Badlands backcountry. This one is for hikers who want a quick shot of adrenaline and a view that earns its keep.

Safety Advisory

The clay and gravel surface becomes dangerously slick after any rain. If the ground is wet or storms are approaching, skip this trail entirely — a slip on the steep sections means sliding down exposed rock with nothing to grab.

There is zero shade on this trail and the clay walls radiate heat like an oven. In summer afternoons, surface temperatures on the Badlands formations can exceed what the air temperature suggests by a wide margin. Carry water even for this short scramble.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Use Saddle Pass as a one-way entrance to the Castle Trail or Medicine Root Loop rather than an out-and-back — the descent is harder on loose gravel than the climb up, and you can loop back along the gentler Cliff Shelf or Door Trail areas.

Trail Tip

Wear boots with aggressive tread, not sneakers. The clay surface turns to greased glass when wet, and even dry conditions leave you sliding on marble-like gravel. Trekking poles are overkill for the distance but genuinely helpful on the steepest pitches.

Trail Tip

Hit it early morning for the best photography — the eastern light carves deep shadows into the Wall formations, and you'll have the scramble to yourself before the tour bus crowds arrive at the nearby Door and Window trailheads.
