What to Expect

This barely-there loop starts near campsite #18 in Rio Grande Village and immediately feels like walking into a different park. You leave the desert behind and drop into a dense thicket of cottonwoods and willows hugging the Rio Grande — a genuine oasis that pulls in birds like a magnet. The trail is flat, well-packed dirt with a short spur that climbs a small hill for panoramic views of the river, the Chisos Mountains, and Mexico just across the water. The elevation gain is negligible — think a couple flights of stairs. Bring binoculars, not trekking poles. On a good morning you might tick off twenty or thirty species before most hikers have laced up their boots. This is the trail for birders, photographers, and anyone who thinks the best hikes are the ones where you stand still the longest.

Safety Advisory

The Rio Grande Village area is prime habitat for western diamondback rattlesnakes, especially in warmer months. Stay on the trail and watch where you step, particularly around rocks and brush.

Summer temperatures routinely blast past 110 degrees down here in the river lowlands — this is the hottest corner of an already scorching park. Even on a short walk, carry water and wear sun protection.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive at first light — the hour after sunrise is when bird activity peaks here, and you'll have the trail to yourself before campers start stirring.

Trail Tip

Bring a field guide specific to the Trans-Pecos region. Big Bend sits at the crossroads of eastern and western bird ranges, so you'll see species here that don't overlap anywhere else in the US.

Trail Tip

Climb the short hilltop spur even if you're only here for birds — the 360-degree view of the Rio Grande floodplain below is one of the best vantage points in the park for spotting raptors circling on morning thermals.
