What to Expect

Deadhorse Trail drops you into genuine wilderness without demanding a death march to get there. The roughly five-mile round trip starts on the North Rim and descends through scrubby oak and serviceberry into the Black Canyon Wilderness Area, where the landscape opens up to sweeping views of Deadhorse Gulch and the Gunnison River threading past East Portal far below. The trail is well-defined but not manicured — expect loose rock, uneven footing, and a few sections where the grade steepens enough to remind your knees they exist. The real payoff is the sense of isolation: the North Rim sees a fraction of the South Rim's traffic, and this trail pushes you even further from the crowds. Birders will want binoculars — raptors ride the thermals along the canyon walls. This one rewards hikers who want solitude and canyon views without a grueling commitment.

Safety Advisory

The trail skirts canyon edges with no railings or barriers in several spots. The Painted Wall drops nearly two thousand feet straight down — keep children close and watch your footing on loose gravel near overlooks.

There is no water along this trail and very little shade once you descend into the gulch. The high-desert sun at seven thousand feet is deceptively intense, so carry more water than you think you need.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

This is the only trail in the park that allows day-use horseback riding with no permit, so plan accordingly — the trail surface can be chewed up after equestrian traffic, especially in early summer.

Trail Tip

The North Rim Road typically opens in mid-April and closes after Thanksgiving, but exact dates shift with snowpack. Call the ranger station before driving up, because there's no cell service once you leave Crawford.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars and pause at the canyon overlook points — peregrine falcons nest on the cliff faces, and you can often spot them hunting in the mornings when thermals start building.
