Hike Oak Flat Trail - South Rim
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The trail traverses narrow, exposed slopes with significant drop-offs and no guardrails — keep a close hand on kids and watch your footing on loose gravel, especially on the steeper switchbacks.
Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast from June through August. The exposed slopes and the canyon itself attract lightning, so start early and be off-trail by early afternoon.

Pro Tips
Hike the loop counterclockwise — the steepest section is easier to descend than climb, and you'll hit the best canyon viewpoints earlier when morning light rakes across the Painted Wall.
This trail connects to the rim-level paths, so pair it with the Rim Rock Nature Trail for a longer outing without backtracking to your car.
The Gambel oak section explodes with gold and amber in late September — time your visit for the last week of September through early October for peak color against the dark canyon walls.
