What to Expect

Starting from the North Rim Ranger Station, this out-and-back route wastes no time getting to the point — literally. The trail rolls through scrubby Gambel oak and serviceberry before the forest opens up and the canyon announces itself with increasing drama. The path is well-worn but rocky in stretches, with a few short scrambles over exposed rock slabs near the end. Then you reach Exclamation Point, and the name earns itself: a jaw-dropping view straight down into the narrowest section of the Black Canyon, where the Gunnison River looks like a silver thread nearly two thousand feet below. The Painted Wall — Colorado's tallest cliff face — dominates the opposite rim. At just over three miles round trip, this is the single best effort-to-payoff ratio on the North Rim. Perfect for hikers who want a legitimate canyon experience without committing to a full day.

Safety Advisory

The overlook at Exclamation Point has minimal railing and sheer drops of nearly two thousand feet — keep children within arm's reach and resist the urge to lean out for a better photo. The rock can be loose at the edges.

The North Rim road and facilities typically close after Thanksgiving and don't reopen until mid-May, depending on snowpack. Check with the park before planning a spring visit — the road can stay gated well into June in heavy snow years.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit the trail by 8 AM in summer — the North Rim gets far less traffic than the South, but Exclamation Point is the star attraction up here and the overlook area is small enough to feel crowded with just six people.

Trail Tip

Wear shoes with solid grip for the final approach; the last section crosses exposed rock slabs that get slick if there's any moisture, and a stumble here puts you uncomfortably close to a very long drop.

Trail Tip

Bring a wide-angle lens or step back from the railing — the canyon is so deep and narrow that a standard phone camera can't capture the full scale. The best photo angle is from the rocks just to the left of the main overlook platform, shooting southeast toward the Painted Wall.
