What to Expect

Mossy Cave is Bryce Canyon's best-kept secret for people who want the magic without the workout. Starting from a small pulloff on Highway 12 — well north of the main park amphitheater — the trail follows Water Canyon creek through a landscape that feels nothing like the rest of Bryce. The path splits early: go right to reach a surprisingly powerful waterfall fed by a pioneer-era irrigation canal, or go left to the namesake Mossy Cave, a sheltered overhang dripping with bright green moss in summer and dramatic icicles in winter. The elevation gain is barely noticeable — think parking-garage ramp, not staircase. Red rock hoodoos frame the canyon walls above you while the creek babbles alongside. This is the trail for families with small kids, anyone with limited mobility, or hikers who arrived at Bryce exhausted from a Zion day and still want something memorable.

Safety Advisory

The creek crossing near the trailhead can be slippery on wet rock, and there is no bridge — watch your footing, especially with kids. Water shoes or boots with good tread make a difference.

In winter, ice builds up on the trail surface and inside the cave area. Microspikes are strongly recommended from December through March.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit both spurs — the fork comes quickly, and most people only visit the cave. The waterfall spur to the right is shorter and arguably more photogenic, especially in spring runoff. Do the waterfall first, then double back to the cave.

Trail Tip

Park early or visit late afternoon. The lot holds maybe fifteen cars, and there is no overflow — once it fills, you are circling Highway 12 waiting for someone to leave. Midday in summer is the worst.

Trail Tip

Visit in January or February for the ice formations inside Mossy Cave. The frozen curtains of icicles hanging from the overhang are genuinely spectacular, and you will have the trail nearly to yourself. Wear microspikes — the trail glazes over in winter.
