What to Expect

From Sunset Point, the trail wastes no time — you're immediately descending steep switchbacks into the amphitheater, dropping roughly the height of a 60-story building in under a mile and a half. The Wall Street section squeezes you between towering orange limestone walls so narrow you could almost touch both sides, with ancient Douglas-firs somehow clinging to life in the slot below. Thor's Hammer looms overhead like a balanced rock that defied physics and won. The Two Bridges side opens up with broader canyon views and less claustrophobic scenery, making the full loop feel like two entirely different hikes stitched together. The catch: everything you descend, you climb back out, and those switchbacks at 8,000 feet of elevation hit harder than you'd expect for a trail under three miles. This is the ideal introduction to Bryce's underworld for anyone who wants more than a rim-side photo op but isn't ready for an all-day death march.

Safety Advisory

The elevation sits above 8,000 feet — visitors coming from sea level will feel the thin air on the climb out. Take the switchbacks slower than your ego wants and stop to breathe without shame.

Wall Street's narrow switchbacks get icy and treacherous in winter and are closed seasonally. Even in shoulder season, shaded sections can hold ice patches well into April. Check with the visitor center before assuming Wall Street is open.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop clockwise — drop down Wall Street first while your legs are fresh, then climb out the more gradual Two Bridges side. The Wall Street switchbacks are brutal going up and the narrow walls trap afternoon heat.

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM to dodge the worst of the Sunset Point parking crush. The lot fills by mid-morning in summer, and the overflow shuttle situation adds 20-30 minutes to your start.

Trail Tip

The best photo of Thor's Hammer comes about a third of the way down the Two Bridges side in the late afternoon, when the low sun lights the hoodoo against deep blue sky. Morning light flattens it — patience pays off here.
