What to Expect

You start at Sunrise Point and immediately begin dropping into the amphitheater — and dropping is the operative word. The trail loses about a thousand feet of elevation in a mile and a half, which means the hike in feels like a leisurely stroll through a sandcastle city and the hike out feels like a StairMaster session at altitude. The path winds between towering orange and white hoodoos that dwarf you on both sides, cutting through narrow slots and under natural windows carved by millions of years of freeze-thaw cycles. At the bottom, a short spur leads to the Queen Victoria formation — a hoodoo that genuinely looks like the monarch in profile, which is rare for named rock formations that usually require a lot of imagination. The smart move is combining this with the Navajo Loop for a roughly three-mile circuit that hits both the garden and Wall Street sections. This is the single best introductory hike into the Bryce amphitheater, and anyone who can handle stairs will love it.

Safety Advisory

Bryce sits above 8,000 feet — the elevation sneaks up on visitors from lower altitudes, and that climb back to the rim will feel significantly harder than expected. Take it slow on the return and don't be embarrassed to stop and catch your breath.

The trail surface is a mix of packed dirt and loose gravel on the switchbacks. Proper footwear with tread matters here — sandals and fashion sneakers are a recipe for a slow, painful slide on the steep sections.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the combo loop by descending Queen's Garden from Sunrise Point and climbing out via Navajo Loop at Sunset Point — descending the steep Navajo switchbacks is far easier on the knees than climbing them, and you finish at Sunset Point where the shuttle runs back to Sunrise.

Trail Tip

Get on the trail by 7:30 AM in summer to catch morning light illuminating the hoodoos from the east — the orange sandstone practically glows, and you'll have the trail mostly to yourself before the tour bus crowds arrive around 10 AM.

Trail Tip

The best photo spot isn't at Queen Victoria herself — it's about two-thirds of the way down where the trail passes through a corridor of hoodoos with a natural window framing Thor's Hammer in the distance. Look for the opening on your left as you descend.
