What to Expect

Starting from the Swamp Canyon overlook along the main park road, this loop drops you off the rim and into a side of Bryce Canyon most visitors never see. The first stretch descends through a narrow drainage lined with hoodoos, but the scenery quickly shifts from the classic orange amphitheater into dense stands of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir — a genuine backcountry feel just a few miles from the shuttle stops. You'll connect with a segment of the Under the Rim Trail before climbing back up through mixed forest, gaining back every foot you lost on the way down. Signage is sparse, so you'll actually need to pay attention to your route instead of just following the crowd. The payoff is the solitude: while hundreds of hikers pack the Navajo Loop, you might share this trail with a handful of people all day. Perfect for hikers who already know Bryce's greatest hits and want something quieter and more rugged.

Safety Advisory

The trail is significantly less maintained than the Bryce Amphitheater trails — expect loose rock, fallen trees, and sections where the path narrows to a faint track through the forest. Ankle-supporting boots are worth it here.

Navigation is the real hazard on this loop. The junction where you leave the Under the Rim Trail to climb back to the rim is easy to walk right past. If you've been on the Under the Rim Trail for more than half a mile past Swamp Canyon, you've gone too far.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at the Swamp Canyon overlook pullout along the main park road between Rainbow Point and Bryce Point — parking is limited to about six cars, so arrive before 9 AM in summer or you'll be circling back.

Trail Tip

Carry a physical map or download the NPS Bryce Canyon trail map offline before you go. Cell service is nonexistent on this loop, and the trail junctions with the Under the Rim Trail are easy to miss without signage.

Trail Tip

Hike the loop clockwise (drop into Swamp Canyon first, return via the connecting trail) to get the steepest descent out of the way while your legs are fresh and to save the more gradual forest climb for the return.
