What to Expect

This is Bryce Canyon's great escape — nearly 23 miles of backcountry running beneath the rim from Rainbow Point south to Bryce Point north, trading the famous hoodoo amphitheaters for something wilder and quieter. You'll pass through ponderosa pine forests, open meadows dotted with wildflowers in season, and across side canyons that frame distant pink and white cliffs in ways the crowded overlooks never will. The trail rolls relentlessly, gaining and losing serious elevation as it dips into drainages and climbs back out — expect your quads to have opinions by day two. Three connecting trails at Agua Canyon, Whiteman Bench, and Swamp Canyon let you bail out or create shorter sections. The hoodoos aren't the headline here; instead it's the solitude, the long views, and the satisfaction of earning a version of Bryce that most visitors never see. Built for backpackers who want to leave the selfie sticks behind.

Safety Advisory

Bryce sits above 8,000 feet, and this trail tops out near 9,100 feet at Rainbow Point. Altitude sickness, afternoon thunderstorms with lightning, and rapid temperature drops are real concerns — even in summer, nighttime temps can dip near freezing.

Water sources along the trail are unreliable and often dry by late summer. Treat all water, and never count on a spring being active without a recent ranger report.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike south to north (Rainbow Point to Bryce Point) to take advantage of a net downhill of roughly 1,500 feet — your knees will thank you, and the shuttle system makes the car logistics painless.

Trail Tip

Water is scarce and seasonal along this route. Check current water source conditions at the visitor center before heading out, and carry capacity for at least two dry stretches between reliable sources.

Trail Tip

Use the three connector trails to design a two-day sampler instead of committing to the full traverse — the Swamp Canyon connector to Under-the-Rim and back makes a stellar overnight with far less planning.
