What to Expect

Aztec Butte packs a surprising amount of reward into less than a mile and a half. You'll start on a sandy wash that feels almost too easy, wandering through scrubby desert flats in the Island in the Sky district. Then the trail splits and things get interesting — you'll scramble up slickrock to the top of a sandstone butte, where the views open up across the White Rim and the canyons below like a topographic map come to life. The real treasure is a pair of ancestral Puebloan granaries tucked into alcoves near the summit, stone structures that have endured centuries of wind and weather. The elevation gain is modest — roughly equivalent to walking up a 20-story building — but the slickrock sections demand attention to footing. This is the trail for hikers who want ancient history and big views without committing to a full day on the mesa.

Safety Advisory

The slickrock scramble near the top is exposed with no guardrails — keep your distance from edges, especially on the overlook spur where the sandstone drops away abruptly.

There is zero shade on this trail and zero water sources; in summer, temperatures on exposed rock can exceed what the air temperature suggests by a wide margin, so carry more water than you think a short hike warrants.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the left fork first to reach the granaries — they're easy to miss if you only follow the right spur to the overlook and run out of steam.

Trail Tip

Follow the cairns carefully on the slickrock sections; the route isn't always intuitive when the trail transitions from sand to stone, and wandering off-route wastes time and energy.

Trail Tip

Hit this trail in the first hour after sunrise when the morning light rakes across the granary alcoves — the stonework photographs beautifully in warm sidelight, and you'll likely have the butte entirely to yourself.
