What to Expect

This loop starts right from the Squareflatop Campground area in the Needles District and immediately drops you into a landscape that feels like hiking through a geology textbook come to life. You'll traverse slickrock benches where the sandstone has been sculpted into fins, grabbing two metal ladders bolted into the rock to climb between canyon levels — they're sturdy but will get your attention if heights aren't your thing. The route threads between Big Spring Canyon and Elephant Canyon, crossing mesa tops with sweeping views down into narrow slots striped in red and white. Navigation requires following cairns across bare rock, so you'll spend as much time looking down as looking out. At over ten miles, this is a full-day commitment that rewards route-finding hikers who want the Needles experience without the permit hassle of the backcountry zones.

Safety Advisory

The two metal ladders are non-negotiable sections of the route with real exposure — if you're uncomfortable with heights or have limited upper-body strength, this trail is not the one to push through on.

Cairn navigation across slickrock is genuinely tricky in flat midday light when shadows disappear; losing the route means scrambling across unmarked sandstone with drop-offs nearby.

Desert temperatures swing hard — even in spring and fall, afternoons can push past 90 degrees on exposed rock while mornings hover near freezing. Dress in layers and time your start early.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop clockwise — you'll hit the ladders on the ascent rather than the descent, which is significantly less nerve-wracking with a pack on.

Trail Tip

Carry at least three liters per person; there's no reliable water source on the loop, and the slickrock radiates heat that will drain you faster than you expect.

Trail Tip

The junction with the Chesler Park Trail can be confusing — download the NPS Needles trails PDF ahead of time, because cell service is nonexistent out here and cairns can be ambiguous at intersections.
