What to Expect

This is one of those trails where the effort-to-reward ratio is almost absurd. You'll leave your vehicle along White Rim Road — which means you've already committed to the real adventure just getting here — and walk a flat, sandy path through sparse desert scrub for barely ten minutes. The terrain is open, exposed, and sun-blasted, with nothing but cryptobiotic soil crust and scattered rock between you and the sky. Then the ground simply falls away, and you're standing at the edge of a sheer sandstone cliff watching the Colorado River execute a lazy, impossibly tight horseshoe bend hundreds of feet below. The scale is staggering — the kind of view that makes conversation stop. This trail is perfect for anyone already running White Rim Road who wants a leg-stretching pause with a jaw-dropping payoff.

Safety Advisory

The overlook has no railings or barriers — the cliff edge is abrupt and the drop is fatal. Keep well back from the rim, especially on windy days, and watch children and dogs closely (though dogs aren't allowed on the trail).

White Rim Road is remote and has no cell service, no water sources, and limited rescue access. A breakdown or medical issue out here is a serious situation — travel prepared with extra supplies and let someone know your itinerary.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

This trail is accessed from White Rim Road, which requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle and typically a permit for overnight trips — plan your White Rim logistics well before thinking about this stop.

Trail Tip

There is zero shade and zero water on this walk or anywhere nearby on White Rim Road. Carry more water than you think you need for the full driving route, not just this short stroll.

Trail Tip

The overlook faces roughly west, so late afternoon light turns the canyon walls and river below into deep amber and rust — time your White Rim itinerary to hit this stop in the last two hours before sunset if you can.
