What to Expect

Grand View Point is the kind of trail that makes you feel like you cheated — under two miles of flat, easy walking and you get one of the most jaw-dropping panoramas in the entire national park system. The paved-then-dirt path follows the narrow spine of Island in the Sky mesa, with the canyon dropping away on both sides like the earth simply gave up. You'll pass juniper and pinyon pine clinging to the sandstone, and the terrain is mostly level with gentle undulations over slickrock. At the point itself, you're staring across a hundred miles of canyon country — the La Sal Mountains, the Needles District, the White Rim Road tracing its ribbon far below, and the Colorado River cutting through it all. This is the trail for anyone who wants a world-class view without earning it through suffering. Photographers, families with older kids, and sunset chasers will be in heaven.

Safety Advisory

There are no railings at the viewpoint and the canyon drops over a thousand feet straight down. The sandstone edge can be crumbly and deceptive — stay well back, especially with children or in windy conditions.

Summer temperatures on the exposed mesa regularly push past 100 degrees with zero shade for the entire trail. Carry more water than you think you need and avoid midday hiking from June through August.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset to claim a perch at the point — the last half-mile gets crowded during golden hour, and the best flat rocks for sitting fill up fast.

Trail Tip

Skip the pavement and walk on the slickrock alongside the trail for better footing and fewer people. The rock is grippy when dry and gives you freedom to find your own vantage points along the rim.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the nearby Murphy Point or White Rim Overlook trails for a full morning — Grand View Point works best as the finale since nothing else will live up to it afterward.
