What to Expect

The Lathrop Trail to Canyon Rim is one of those Canyonlands hikes that lulls you into complacency before delivering a knockout punch of scenery. You'll start on the mesa top, crossing wide-open grasslands dotted with juniper and pinyon pine — flat, easy walking that feels almost too mellow for a 'moderate' rating. The trail gradually works its way toward the canyon edge, and the terrain shifts from soft desert soil to slickrock and sandstone ledges. Then the rim drops away and you're staring straight down at the Colorado River snaking through red rock walls, with the unmistakable spire of Airport Tower commanding the foreground. The full Lathrop Trail continues all the way down to the river, but this canyon rim turnaround gives you the postcard view without the brutal descent and climb back out. Perfect for hikers who want big Canyonlands payoff without committing to a full-day sufferfest.

Safety Advisory

The canyon rim has no guardrails and the sandstone edge can be crumbly and undercut — stay well back from the lip, especially if it's windy or if you're positioning for photos.

Cryptobiotic soil crust (the dark, bumpy biological soil) is everywhere in the grassland section. Stay on the trail to avoid destroying colonies that take decades to recover — and watch for cairns where the path crosses bare slickrock, as it's easy to wander off-route.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early morning or late afternoon — the grassland section is completely exposed and the midday sun turns this into a microwave. The rim views are also dramatically better in angled light when Airport Tower throws long shadows.

Trail Tip

Carry at least two liters per person even though this is only a five-mile roundtrip. There is zero shade and zero water sources on this trail, and the dry desert air will dehydrate you faster than you expect.

Trail Tip

At the canyon rim, walk a few hundred yards south along the edge for a less-visited overlook where you can see the Colorado River bending around the base of Airport Tower — this angle is far more photogenic than the main viewpoint and you'll likely have it entirely to yourself.
