What to Expect

Murphy Point starts unassumingly — a flat, sandy path across the mesa top that feels more like a desert stroll than a proper hike. About halfway out, you'll pass the remnants of an old cattle corral, a reminder that ranchers once worked this unforgiving landscape. The trail stays level and exposed the entire way, weaving through scrubby desert brush with virtually no shade. Then the mesa simply ends, and the payoff hits you all at once: a jaw-dropping panorama where the earth drops away hundreds of feet to the White Rim below. Candlestick Tower stands like a lonely sentinel to the west, the Green River carves its lazy path through the canyon, and the White Rim Road traces a thin white line across the benchlands. This is one of the easiest ways to earn a world-class view in Canyonlands, making it perfect for hikers who want the Island in the Sky experience without the quad-burning effort.

Safety Advisory

The rim at Murphy Point is unfenced with sheer drop-offs of several hundred feet. The sandstone edge can be crumbly and deceptive — stay well back, especially on windy days.

There is zero shade on this entire trail. In summer months, temperatures on the exposed mesa regularly push past 100 degrees, and the reflected heat off the rock amplifies it. Carry more water than you think you need for a short hike and avoid midday from June through August.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for late afternoon when the western-facing overlook catches golden light on Candlestick Tower and the White Rim — the shadows deepen the canyon layers dramatically compared to the flat midday light.

Trail Tip

The trailhead shares a spur road off the main Island in the Sky road, and parking is limited to a small pullout. Arrive before 10 AM on spring and fall weekends or you may end up creating your own spot on the shoulder.

Trail Tip

Walk past the obvious viewpoint at trail's end and explore slightly to the right along the rim — there's a narrow finger of rock that gives you a vertigo-inducing perspective straight down to the Murphy Loop below, plus an unobstructed view of the Green River's horseshoe bend.
