The Joint Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The slot canyon can flash flood during monsoon season (July through September); check weather forecasts before heading in and avoid the trail if thunderstorms are anywhere in the region.
Some boulder scrambles in the joint require hands-on moves with real drop exposure — this isn't the trail for toddlers or anyone uncomfortable with mild scrambling on uneven rock.

Pro Tips
Start from the Chesler Park trailhead and combine The Joint with the Chesler Park loop for a longer day — doing The Joint alone feels almost too quick for the drive out to the Needles.
Leave your trekking poles stowed for the slot section; you'll need free hands to brace against the walls and navigate the tight squeezes, and poles just clatter against the rock.
Hit the slot canyon between 10 AM and 2 PM when overhead light floods straight down into the narrow passages — the contrast between shadow and sandstone makes for the best photos.
