What to Expect

This short out-and-back packs a geological punch that far outweighs its modest distance. From the trailhead in the Island in the Sky district, you'll follow a well-marked path across slickrock and packed desert soil, gaining just enough elevation to get your heart rate up without breaking a sweat. The trail splits at two overlooks — the first gives you a jaw-dropping view into the crater's swirling rings of white Navajo Sandstone, while the second (slightly farther) offers a different angle that makes the scale click. Scientists still argue whether this thing was carved by a salt dome or a meteor impact, and staring into it, you'll understand why neither side wants to concede. The exposed rock and lack of shade make it feel bigger than it is. Geology nerds, photographers, and anyone who wants a quick win in Canyonlands will love this one.

Safety Advisory

The overlook viewpoints have steep, unfenced drop-offs — keep a firm grip on kids and stay behind the rock cairns marking the edge.

Zero shade on this trail. In summer temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees on exposed slickrock, so carry more water than you think you need for a short hike.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Do not skip the second overlook — it's only a few extra minutes past the first, and the perspective shift makes Upheaval Dome look entirely different, almost like a separate feature altogether.

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM in summer; the trail is fully exposed and the slickrock radiates heat like a parking lot. Spring and fall mornings are ideal.

Trail Tip

If you want more, the trail extends to the crater floor at roughly 5.3 miles roundtrip with serious elevation change — but that version is a completely different beast requiring route-finding skills and significantly more water.
