What to Expect

This is one of those Canyonlands trails that delivers a wildly disproportionate reward for minimal effort. From the trailhead near Grand View Point in the Island in the Sky district, you follow a mostly flat, well-worn path across slickrock and packed desert soil — exposed the entire way, with not a scrap of shade to speak of. The terrain is open and gently undulating, crossing the mesa top with scattered cryptobiotic soil crusts between cairned sections. At the overlook, the ground simply drops away, and you're staring down nearly two thousand feet to the White Rim bench, the Colorado River carving its lazy green ribbon below, Monument Basin's sandstone spires standing like a ruined city, and the La Sal Mountains snowcapped on the horizon. It's a visual gut-punch for a leg-stretch. Perfect for anyone who wants canyon country grandeur without the knee-destroying descent.

Safety Advisory

The overlook has no railings or barriers — the cliff drops vertically for hundreds of feet. Keep children close and watch your footing on the slickrock near the edge, especially when wind gusts pick up on the exposed mesa.

There is zero shade on this trail. Even on a short out-and-back, desert sun at elevation can surprise you — temperatures on exposed slickrock can run twenty degrees hotter than what your weather app says.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for late afternoon when the east-facing overlook catches golden light on Monument Basin and the White Rim — the shadows deepen the canyon layers dramatically compared to the flat midday light.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the nearby Grand View Point trail for a two-for-one afternoon — both leave from the same road-end area, and together they cover about five miles of easy walking with completely different vantage points.

Trail Tip

Walk past the obvious first overlook ledge and explore slightly south along the rim — there are less-visited perches where you can sit on the sandstone edge without another soul in sight, and the Colorado River bends are better framed from these angles.
