What to Expect

This short out-and-back puts you face-to-face with some of the most otherworldly rock formations in Utah without demanding much from your legs. From the trailhead, you follow a low ridgeline with the Cathedrals — a parade of rust-colored monoliths — rising like pipe organs to your left. The terrain is open desert with minimal shade, loose sand, and slickrock patches, so the walking is easy but the sun exposure is relentless. At the turnaround, Upper Cathedral Valley spreads out below you in a panorama that makes the whole drive worth it. The scale is almost disorienting — these towers stand over 500 feet tall, and you're essentially alone with them. This trail is built for photographers, geology nerds, and anyone who wants dramatic Capitol Reef scenery without the leg work of longer routes like Chimney Rock.

Safety Advisory

There is no shade anywhere on this trail. In summer months, ground temperatures can be significantly hotter than the air, and heat exhaustion is a real risk even on a short hike. Avoid midday from June through September.

Cathedral Valley is one of the most remote corners of Capitol Reef — cell service is nonexistent and the nearest help is a long, rough drive away. Let someone know your plans before heading out.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The real challenge here isn't the hike — it's the drive. Cathedral Valley requires a high-clearance vehicle and a river ford on the Hartnet Road approach. Check conditions at the visitor center before committing, especially after any rain.

Trail Tip

Carry at least two liters per person even though it's a short hike. There is zero shade and zero water along the trail, and Cathedral Valley sits at a lower elevation where summer temps regularly crack triple digits.

Trail Tip

Arrive in the first or last hour of daylight for photography. The monoliths face roughly east-west, so sunrise paints them in deep orange while sunset throws long shadows across the valley floor — both are dramatically better than the flat midday light.
