What to Expect

Cohab Canyon starts with a deceptively steep switchback climb right behind the Fruita campground — the kind of opener that makes you question your life choices for about ten minutes. But push through that initial grunt up roughly four hundred feet and the trail rewards you by ducking into a narrow, twisting canyon carved from Wingate sandstone. The walls close in, the light shifts, and suddenly you're in a completely different world from the open desert floor below. Slot-like passages give way to small natural windows and hoodoos that most Capitol Reef visitors never see. At the top, a spur trail leads to overlooks with wide-angle views of Fruita's green orchards set against red cliffs — one of the best viewpoints in the park that almost nobody bothers to reach. Perfect for hikers who want a quick, punchy adventure with outsized payoff.

Safety Advisory

The opening switchbacks are fully exposed with loose gravel on slickrock — wear shoes with good tread and watch your footing, especially on the descent when tired legs make stumbles more likely.

Flash flood risk exists in the narrow canyon sections during monsoon season (July through September). Check weather forecasts before heading in and turn back if storms are building.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the spur trail to the overlook viewpoints — most hikers skip them, but they deliver the best views of the Fruita Historic District and the Waterpocket Fold. Budget an extra twenty minutes and you won't regret it.

Trail Tip

Start from the Highway 24 trailhead instead of the Fruita campground side if you want to do the steep section as a downhill finish rather than a gasping opener. You can also turn it into a one-way shuttle hike between the two trailheads.

Trail Tip

Morning light floods the canyon walls with warm color and keeps temperatures manageable. By midday, the initial climb becomes a sun-baked slog with zero shade on the switchbacks.
