What to Expect

Starting from the Capitol Gorge trailhead, Golden Throne wastes no time letting you know it means business. The trail climbs steadily through slickrock and sandy washes, weaving past water pockets and ancient rock formations that look like they belong on another planet. The terrain is raw desert — exposed Navajo sandstone, cairn-marked routes across bare rock, and stretches where the trail narrows to a boot-width ledge above carved canyons. The reward is a front-row seat to the Golden Throne itself, a massive dome of Entrada sandstone that glows amber in afternoon light. Along the way, you'll catch sweeping views down into Capitol Gorge and across the Waterpocket Fold. This trail is built for hikers who want to earn their views and don't mind a little route-finding on slickrock.

Safety Advisory

The trail crosses open slickrock with limited shade — heat exhaustion is a real risk from May through September. Summer surface temperatures on exposed sandstone can exceed what your boots were designed for.

Flash flood potential is serious in Capitol Gorge. Check weather forecasts before driving in, and never attempt the access road or trail if storms are anywhere in the region — water funnels through these canyons fast and without warning.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start by mid-morning at the latest — the Capitol Gorge road is unpaved and can get rutted, so give yourself extra time reaching the trailhead, especially after rain.

Trail Tip

Carry at least two liters per person; there is zero shade and zero water sources on this trail. A sun hat and sun sleeves are non-negotiable in summer.

Trail Tip

The best photography happens in the last two hours before sunset when the Golden Throne lights up like a lantern — but plan your return carefully, because navigating cairns on slickrock in fading light is a recipe for a wrong turn.
