What to Expect

Grand Wash is Capitol Reef's gateway canyon — a flat, sandy stroll between towering Navajo sandstone walls that climb hundreds of feet on either side, close enough in places that you could almost touch both walls at once. The trail follows a dry wash bed through one of the park's most dramatic narrows, where the canyon squeezes tight and the red-orange walls block out most of the sky. The elevation gain is negligible, barely a speed bump, making this one of those rare desert hikes where you can gawk upward without worrying about your footing. Butch Cassidy reportedly used this canyon as an escape route, and walking through, you understand why — it feels hidden from the world. Keep an eye out for the spur trail connecting to Cassidy Arch partway through. This is the trail for anyone who wants slot canyon drama without slot canyon difficulty — perfect for families, casual hikers, and photographers who want those towering-wall compositions.

Safety Advisory

Flash floods are a serious and genuine threat in Grand Wash — the canyon is narrow with no high ground to escape to. Check weather forecasts before entering and do not hike if rain is predicted anywhere in the region, even miles away. The park posts flash flood warnings at the trailhead.

Grand Wash Road closes seasonally and after storms. Verify road access at the visitor center before driving out, or plan to start from the Highway 24 trailhead instead.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Set up a car shuttle by leaving one vehicle at the Highway 24 trailhead and another at the Grand Wash Road trailhead — this turns the roundtrip into a one-way 2.2-mile walk and lets you experience the full canyon without backtracking.

Trail Tip

Start from the Grand Wash Road (south) end in the morning when the canyon walls catch the light higher up, creating that warm glow against deep blue sky — afternoon light tends to leave the narrow sections in full shadow.

Trail Tip

About a mile in from the south trailhead, watch for the signed junction to the Cassidy Arch Trail. Even if you skip the steep climb to the arch, the junction area has some of the best narrow-canyon views on the whole route.
