What to Expect

Headquarters Canyon Route is one of Capitol Reef's quieter gems — a short out-and-back that funnels you between towering Navajo sandstone walls that seem to close in with every step. The trail starts open and unassuming, crossing sandy wash terrain before the canyon narrows into a proper slot section where the walls glow amber and rust in the right light. The footing is mostly sand and slickrock, nothing technical, but the scenery punches well above its weight for a trail rated easy. The route dead-ends at a striking sandstone ramp in the Kayenta formation — a geological layer cake that makes the turnaround point feel like a destination, not a dead end. This one is perfect for photographers, geology nerds, and anyone who wants a slot canyon experience without the crowds or difficulty of something like Buckskin Gulch.

Safety Advisory

Flash flood risk is real in this canyon — check weather forecasts for the entire watershed before entering, and never hike here if rain is predicted anywhere in the region. Slot canyons can flood from storms miles away with zero warning.

The sandy wash terrain can obscure the route in spots, especially after wind or water events — pay attention to your surroundings on the way in so you can navigate back out confidently.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The trail is closed April 1 through August 31 for raptor nesting — plan your visit for September through March, with October and November offering the best light and comfortable temperatures in the canyon.

Trail Tip

Bring a wide-angle lens or phone attachment — the narrow slot sections with soaring sandstone walls are nearly impossible to capture with a standard focal length, and the light bouncing between walls creates some of Capitol Reef's best photography opportunities.

Trail Tip

Start early in the morning or visit on overcast days for the most even canyon light; midday sun creates harsh contrast between the bright rim and shadowed canyon floor that will blow out your photos and make navigation harder on your eyes.
