Jailhouse Rock and Temple Rock Route
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Full sun exposure for the entire route with no reliable shade or water sources. Heat exhaustion is a real risk from May through September, even on a relatively short hike like this.
The route crosses open desert terrain with minimal trail markers. Carry a GPS device or downloaded map — it's easy to lose the old road bed on slickrock, and the featureless desert can disorient hikers in flat light or overcast conditions.

Pro Tips
The old road bed can be faint where it crosses slickrock sections — look for small cairns and keep Temple Rock in your sightline as a natural waypoint so you don't wander off route in the open desert.
There is zero water on this route and zero shade. Carry at least two liters per person even in cooler months, and in summer, treat this as an early morning-only outing — the Entrada sandstone radiates heat like an oven.
The viewpoint overlooking Jailhouse Rock makes a natural turnaround for a shorter out-and-back of roughly two miles. Late afternoon light turns the sandstone formations deep orange and throws dramatic shadows across the desert floor — bring a wide-angle lens.
