Lower Cathedral Valley Overlooks Route

What to Expect

This loop takes you along a desert ridge where the real stars are below you — the Temples of the Sun and Moon, Capitol Reef's most iconic and least-visited formations, rising like sandstone skyscrapers from the Cathedral Valley floor. The trail climbs to two saddle viewpoints, each offering a different angle on these monolithic towers and the painted badlands surrounding them. The terrain is typical high-desert ridge walking: loose rock, exposed sandstone, and not a scrap of shade. The route is short enough that moderate hikers can take their time at each overlook without worrying about daylight, but the footing demands attention. This is a trail for people who want a big-landscape payoff without a death march — and who don't mind driving the rugged Cathedral Valley road to get here.

Safety Advisory

The ridge has steep drop-offs on both sides near the saddle viewpoints — stay well back from edges, especially if wind is gusting through the valley.

There is no cell service in Cathedral Valley. Let someone know your plans before driving in, and carry a paper map — GPS tracks can be unreliable on the access road.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The drive to the Cathedral Valley trailhead is the real crux — you'll need high-clearance 4WD and should check road conditions at the visitor center before committing, especially after any rain.

Trail Tip

Bring more water than you think for a 2.5-mile hike. There's zero shade on this ridge and desert heat amplifies fast — plan on at least two liters per person even in spring.

Trail Tip

Hit the overlooks in late afternoon when the Temples of the Sun and Moon glow amber and throw long shadows across the valley floor. Morning light is flat by comparison and robs the formations of their drama.
